Ontario's carbon monoxide detector alarm rule is changing

Starting January 1, 2026, Ontario's Fire Code requires CO alarms in any home with a fuel-burning appliance (furnace, water heater, gas or propane stove, wood stove), a fireplace, or an attached garage – and requires alarms in two places: adjacent to every sleeping area, and on every storey of the home, including storeys without bedrooms. A lot of Ottawa homes built or last updated before this rule have a single detector near the furnace and nothing else – that setup won't meet the new standard.

Why interconnected, hardwired alarms make sense here

Meeting a multi-storey requirement with individual battery units means checking and replacing batteries in several separate devices. Interconnected, hardwired alarms solve that differently: when one alarm triggers, they all sound together, and hardwiring removes the single point of failure a dead battery creates. It's not the only way to comply, but for a multi-storey home it's usually the most practical one to do in a single visit.

Smoke alarms too

While we're wiring for CO coverage, it's an efficient time to bring smoke alarm coverage up to the same standard – every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level. We'll assess your current setup and tell you exactly what's missing rather than replacing devices that are already compliant.

Where the alarms go

Placement matters as much as having the devices – too close to a kitchen or bathroom causes nuisance alarms, too far from a bedroom door defeats the point. We place each unit based on your home's actual layout, not a generic diagram.

Smoke & CO Detector Installation FAQs

Does the new rule apply to my home?

If your home has a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace, or an attached garage, yes. That covers most Ottawa homes with gas or oil furnaces, gas stoves, or an attached garage.

Do the alarms have to be hardwired?

The rule sets placement requirements – near sleeping areas and on every storey. Hardwired, interconnected alarms are a practical way to meet multi-storey coverage in one job, but talk to us about what fits your home.

How many alarms will I need?

Depends on your home's layout and number of storeys – we'll assess what you have now and tell you exactly what's missing.

Can you install these alongside other electrical work?

Yes, it's often efficient to combine this with a panel or inspection visit.
